Four minutes of setup that decide the quality
Pick a model on first launch
base.en is 141 MB and quick. large-v3-turbo is the accurate one and worth the download if you have the disk. Models are fetched inside the app, separately from the application itself.
Set your languages explicitly
Auto-detect misreads short clips, especially from non-native English speakers. Name your languages in Settings — up to three per profile if you switch mid-sentence.
Allow Accessibility if you want auto-paste
macOS needs it before the app can put the transcript at the caret in the window you came from. Dictation is fully usable without it; the transcript still goes to your clipboard.
Check the Control-twice shortcut
If macOS Dictation already uses it, give one of the two a different gesture from Settings → General → Shortcuts.
